A Prescription for Good Health and a Sustainable Future

Ecotherapy

Never before have we faced a global crisis of such magnitude and rapidity, so why do we persist in destroying our habitat?

The idea that we are separate from nature reflects our misunderstanding about the natural world; we are part of nature, just like the animals, trees and the oceans, yet we barely understand the interconnection between the cycles of the Earth and the Moon, and how they can affect us.

In the face of this crisis, many of us are feeling increasingly anxious, confused and disempowered which is further fueled by mixed messages from politicians and the abundant 'Doomsday' media coverage of issues like climate change; Ecotherapy goes beyond Environmentalism and can provide some answers and help people deal more easily with feelings of negativity.

What is Ecotherapy?

Healing means to 'become whole' and Ecotherapy aims to break down and heal the disconnection between ourselves and nature, to de-fragment our lives and reconnect us to the systems upon which we depend for life and meaning. This is done through direct, guided experience of nature, which provides both a mirror for reflecting on the human condition and a tactile reminder that we depend on the Earth's biosphere for our existence.

Ecotherapists, who are basically counsellors, interpreters and facilitators, provide this direct contact to nature backed up by some innovative interpretation techniques, and the combination of Ecological, Spiritual and Psychological elements to the activities ensures a genuinely holistic appreciation of the human/nature relationship. Individuals or groups are taken into natural environments - parks, woodlands, nature reserves or wilderness areas, and guided through a range of experiential activities that have been designed to stimulate positive feelings towards their surroundings - often by simply awakening dormant senses and feelings. Ecotherapists also provide information and practical support for people in the transition from a planet-destroying culture to a life-sustaining society.

What can Ecotherapy do for me?

If you are feeling confused, concerned or overwhelmed by environmental issues like climate change, Ecotherapy can help. Ecotherapy closely examines the human / nature relationship, and there is an abundance of evidence to show that regular contact with the natural environment enhances both physical and mental wellbeing, and is particularly effective at dealing with feelings of disempowerment and eco-anxiety.

Research undertaken by the University of Essex this year has identified 3 key areas that benefit from Ecotherapy:

1/ It improves psychological wellbeing by enhancing mood and self-esteem, while reducing feelings of anger, confusion, depression and tension.

2/ It has a wide range of physical health benefits.

3/ It facilitates social networking and connectivity.

Well-being is one of our most important ends as individuals and as societies, but despite unprecedented economic prosperity we do not necessarily feel better individually or as communities.

However, many people encounter emotional or heart-based feelings when exposed to nature, and the Ecotherapist can build on these feelings to strengthen an inner 'spiritual' connection with their environment, which usually leads to engagement with more fulfilling and sustainable lifestyles.

What can I expect from and Ecotherapy session?

There are a huge number of experiential activities that can be utilised by the Ecotherapist, and they almost always take place outdoors, so suitable clothing should be worn. You will be advised if any other equipment will be required. During a brief consultation, a selection of activities will usually be recommended and you will be prepared and carefully guided through them. The Ecotherapist will be available at all times during the activities. At the end of the session, the activities will be evaluated and any further course of action or treatment will be discussed.

Is it safe for everyone?

Ecotherapy is suitable for all adults, and can be effective on its own or alongside conventional or complementary therapies. It is safe to be used during pregnancy and with people who are seriously or terminally ill.

However, the initial consultation will reveal if there are any particular circumstances where a specific treatment or procedure may not be appropriate or beneficial.
